1. Learning Business English Takes Time
Learning a new language takes time and you need to be patient and not get stressed with your own level of progress. Acquiring a new level of English and Business English is a process and at First Business English we will guide you through that process. We encourage you to make mistakes and making mistakes are all part of learning a new language. Practice makes perfect.
2. Practice Your Business English
There are many opportunities to practice English. You can read English books, watch English news or English movies, but what is important is that you start watching and reading in the English language. It is also important to take notes for review and during your lessons with First Business English we can review your questions and provide answers and guidance. It’s important that you practice.
3. Learn From Your Mistakes
Making mistakes is all part of the process of learning Business English and English in general. At First Business English we know that you will make mistakes and we encourage and support you to try expressing yourself in English. Mistakes are all part of the process. If you are not making mistakes and learning from those mistakes you are effectively not progressing on your learning journey.
4. Question Everything In English
Remember to ask a lot of questions and take notes on all the new vocabulary that you encounter. As you progress on your Business English language journey you will notice new words and phrases that are both familiar and unfamiliar. Being curious and asking questions is the only way that you will get true understanding. Don’t be shy. Asking questions and getting answers will ensure that you will be soon on your way to learning and recognizing all the new words and phrases that you come across.
5. Practice Your Business English
Talk to everybody you can who speaks English. Remember to always speak in English regardless of the situation even if you are unsure how to say something in English. Start with what you know and then you can find other ways to explain what you want to say. Expressions and partial sentences are often a great way to getting your message across where language is concerned. The most important thing is that you try and if the conversation doesn’t go as planned, don’t get disheartened and try again. It is all about practice and understanding. First Business English will boost your confidence.
6. Focus Your Learning
When starting to learn Business English it is important to focus on learning what you set out to learn. In a business there are a multitude of interdependent departments, processes and procedures that make learning Business English difficult and sometimes can promote feelings of being overwhelmed. It is important to strip back your learning objectives and focus on what you need to learn initially and the rest will come in time with experience. At First Business English we will guide you through a set Business English curriculum that ensure you learn at the right pace and that will not overwhelm you.
7. English Language Reading
It’s important for your progression to read in English. Read anything that you can find in English. Books, newspapers, news online, social media, emails and business journals are a great place to start. It doesn’t matter that you may not understand every aspect of an article. Simply read for “gist” whereby you may recognize some words and phrases but not all phrases, but you will gain a general understanding of the article. Acknowledge what you know and ensure to practice pronunciation throughout as this will help you to learn new vocabulary and language structures without noticing.
8. Be Patient & Consistent
Learning a new language takes time and you need to be patient. Don’t get stressed or frustrated that your progress is not as quick as you would like, but be patient and consistent in your effort and time to learn Business English and English in general. Sometimes you will feel behind and sometimes English will come a little easier for you. The most important thing is that you are consistent in your study time and over time you will get better and will succeed in your English language journey.
9. Don’t Translate Sentences Word to Word
The language structure in English is often different than your native language which makes direct translation difficult. Try to use short and simple sentences in English that you are comfortable with. Translating full sentences is not always the best thing to do. As with reading and reading for “gist”, speaking is the same. Making short and simple sentences is often the best to start with when you’re learning. This will help you to put what you’re thinking into words. As you continue to learn with practice and new vocabulary, your English language ability will quickly grow.
10. Forget Rules – Focus On Communication
If you focus on communication then over time you will learn the rules without even noticing. It’s important to communicate when you are learning a new language. Rules will help you in certain scenarios but will not always help when discussing topics as you are learning. The most important thing is to communicate to your language ability and forget the rules. You can learn the theory of learning and speaking English, but unless you practice and start speaking, the rules don’t mean anything. Get out there and start speaking English.
