Food and drinks are a big part of our daily life. Some foods and drinks are countable, and some are uncountable. Knowing the difference helps us talk about them correctly. First Business English provides some examples below to help you get started.
Countable Nouns
Countable nouns are things we can count. We can use “a,” “an,” or numbers with them.
· “I eat an apple every day.”
· “She bought three bananas.”
· “There is a sandwich on the table.”
Examples of Countable Food and Drinks:
· Apple
· Banana
· Sandwich
· Egg
· Carrot
· Bottle of water
· Cup of tea
Uncountable Nouns
Uncountable nouns are things we cannot count easily. We do not use “a,” “an,” or numbers with them.
· “I like rice.”
· “He drinks coffee in the morning.”
· “She eats cheese with bread.”
Examples of Uncountable Food and Drinks:
· Rice
· Coffee
· Milk
· Water
· Bread
· Cheese
· Sugar
How to Use Them
If we want to count uncountable nouns, we use words like “some,” “a piece of,” or “a glass of.”
· “I eat some bread for breakfast.”
· “Can I have a piece of cake?”
· “She drinks a glass of orange juice.”
Example Paragraph
I love eating different kinds of food. In the morning, I eat an egg and some bread. I drink a cup of coffee. For lunch, I have a sandwich and a bottle of water. In the evening, I eat some rice with vegetables. Food and drinks are very important for a healthy life.
