Meeting someone for the first time can be exciting but also a little scary, especially when you are learning English. Don’t worry. Here are some simple tips from First Business English to help you have a great conversation.
1. Greet the Person
Start with a friendly greeting. Here are some easy ways to say hello:
-
- “Hello!”
-
- “Hi!”
-
- “Good morning!” (before 12:00 PM)
-
- “Good afternoon!” (after 12:00 PM)
-
- “Good evening!” (after 6:00 PM)
Always smile and make eye contact to show that you are friendly.
2. Introduce Yourself
After saying hello, tell the person your name:
-
- “My name is (your name).”
-
- “I am (your name).”
You can also ask their name:
-
- “What is your name?”
-
- “Nice to meet you, (their name)!”
If they ask, “How are you?”, you can reply:
-
- “I’m fine, thank you. And you?”
-
- “I’m good! How about you?”
3. Ask Simple Questions
To keep the conversation going, ask simple questions. Here are some examples:
-
- “Where are you from?”
-
- “What do you do?” (for work or studies)
-
- “Do you like (a topic, e.g., music, sports, food)?”
Listen carefully and respond with interest. If you don’t understand something, you can say:
-
- “Can you repeat that, please?”
-
- “I’m sorry, I don’t understand. Can you say it slowly?”
4. Talk About Yourself
When someone asks you a question, give a short and simple answer. For example:
-
- “I am from Spain.”
-
- “I work as a teacher.”
-
- “I like football.”
If you want to say more, you can add:
-
- “And you?” to ask the same question back.
5. Say Goodbye Politely
When the conversation is ending, you can say:
-
- “It was nice to meet you!”
-
- “Have a nice day!”
-
- “See you later!”
-
- “Goodbye!”
6. Practice Makes Perfect
The more you practice, the easier it will be. Try speaking with friends, family, or classmates. You can also practice in front of a mirror or with language apps or simply book a lesson with us at First Business English. Remember, making mistakes is okay. The important thing is to try and enjoy the conversation.
Good luck! Keep learning with First Business English. Best Business English Online.
