Pre-Intermediate Level B1 on the CEFR
A person with a B1 level of proficiency on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) for non-native speakers of English should have the ability to understand and communicate in a variety of everyday situations. First Business English will provide an overview of what someone at the B1 level should be able to understand.
Listening Comprehension:
You should be able to understand the main points of clear, standard speech on familiar topics such as work, school, and leisure activities. You can follow the main ideas of short, simple conversations or discussions, even if they speak at a relatively natural speed. You will also comprehend the general message of announcements, advertisements, and news reports when the topic is familiar to you.
Reading Comprehension:
You will be able to understand the main points and details of simple texts, such as emails, letters, brochures, and short articles on topics that are of personal interest or everyday life. You can extract specific information from advertisements, menus, schedules, and basic instructions. You will also be able to understand the general content of short literary texts like stories or descriptions of events.
Speaking:
You can participate in basic conversations and express opinions on familiar topics to you. You will be able to describe experiences, events, dreams, hopes, and ambitions and give short explanations for opinions and plans. You will be able to ask and answer questions in everyday situations, even if they might need to ask for clarification. You can give directions, make simple requests, and offer basic advice.
Writing:
Write simple, coherent texts on familiar topics or personal experiences. Write emails, messages, and short descriptions of events, people, or places. Provide basic information in a form or application, such as personal details, interests, and experiences.
Conclusion:
It’s important to note that someone at the B1 level might still struggle with more complex language structures, nuanced expressions, and unfamiliar topics. You may make some errors but your communication should still be functional and understandable to native speakers. In addition, the B1 level is a stepping stone for further language development, and individuals at this level often continue to improve their language skills to reach higher proficiency levels.Pre Intermediate
